The smallest church in Snowdonia, set in a beautiful location
This small church enjoys one of the most dramatic locations in Snowdonia, near the classic view towards the Snowdon Horseshoe in the west. The epitome of peace and tranquillity, it is a real gem to visit.
St Julitta’s Church, standing near the junction of Afon Llugwy and Nant y Gwryd, is remarkable for being Snowdonia’s smallest church. The plan of the original building, typical of old churches in Snowdonia, is now unique in the district – the only example where the double square (in which the length is twice the width) has not been altered since first constructed in the 13th–14th centuries.
Originally known as Curig’s Chapel, the building gave its name to the nearby village of Capel Curig. Curig was a 6th-century Welsh saint, but during Norman times the church was re-dedicated to Julitta, believed to be a Christian noblewoman of the 4th century AD. According to tradition, she fled from persecution in central Turkey, leaving her home together with her three-year-old son.
The churchyard of St Julitta’s contains the gravestones of many climbers killed in mountain accidents, reflecting the enduring importance of mountains and climbing in this area.
During the 19th century the growing number of visitors to Capel Curing made the old church too small for the growing congregation. A new church, closer to the village, was opened in 1883. The older church is now maintained by the Friends of St Julitta’s.
Nearby Betws y Coed is a hub for amenities, and a great base for walks in the area.
